Senior Backend Engineer to scale-up e-commerce company in Aarhus

Are you a seasoned backend engineer who thrives on building scalable, event-driven systems in a cloud-native environment? Do you want to be part of a team shaping the infrastructure and core services behind a leading e-commerce platform? then please go on reading…

To our client Whiteaway Group, we are looking for a clever Senior Backend Engineer for their tech HQ in Aarhus. Here you will join a product-centric company that has scaled rapidly across Scandinavia, driven by a strong digital mindset and a focus on delivering outstanding customer experiences.

Whiteaway Group is a digital-first retail company shipping household appliances across Scandinavia. What started as a fresh idea in the backroom of a Danish kitchen store in 2003 has grown into a leading player in the market. At the heart of this growth is a modern, autonomous tech organization committed to quality, experimentation, and delivery. The team in Aarhus consists of 40 people in the tech department, divided into 7 squads. Five of these squads include developers, product managers, UX-designers, and architects.

You’ll be a key member of one of several autonomous squads, working alongside experienced software engineers to design and develop mission-critical backend systems. Whether it’s commercial operations, customer experience, sales, or delivery, you’ll help build and scale the backend that powers it all.

You will primarily work in a Node.js/TypeScript backend environment, but you are not required to already be senior in this specific stack — strong backend engineering skills are what matters the most.

Your primary responsibilities are to

  • Design, implement, and maintain microservices using TypeScript/Node.js running in a cloud-native (AWS) environment.
If you have experience in another backend language e.g. C#, Java, Python, this is fine – you’ll just have to go through a short learning period to be able to use Node.js/TypeScript.

  • Lead architectural decisions and shape the future of their backend platform using domain-driven design and event-driven patterns.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, developers, and DevOps engineers to deliver reliable and maintainable systems.
  • Ensure performance, security, and observability are first-class concerns in all your solutions.
  • Mentor peers through pairing, MOB programming, and code reviews.

Your Background
We’re looking for someone who combines deep backend expertise with curiosity and leadership:

  • Solid experience building scalable backend systems using backend stacks (e.g. Java, Kotlin, Go, C#, Python) or Node.js/TypeScript — combined with a willingness to work with Node.js/TypeScript going forward.
  • We value strong engineering fundamentals over specific prior experience with Node.js.
  • Strong grasp of system design, DDD, event-driven architecture, and RESTful/async APIs.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and containerized environments (Docker/Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with architectural principles and microservice orchestration.
  • Comfortable working in agile teams, taking ownership of features and mentoring others.
  • Experience with high-traffic e-commerce or logistics systems is a plus but not required.

Whiteaway Offers

  • A flat, informal, involving & supportive leadership culture, where developers have real ownership
  • A supportive culture centered on experimentation and continuous learning
  • Hackathons, pair & MOB programming, and access to learning resources
  • Work-life balance, an amazing lunch and great colleagues
  • Location in Skejby, offering free parking
